2017 - 2021 Boston University, College of Fine Arts Scholarship
I’m a passionate musician who has discovered the rewards of teaching and inspiring others about music. I began learning clarinet at a young age in the Lynn public schools system in Massachusetts. I was encouraged to further pursue musical studies by certain motivating and inspirational mentors. I attended Boston University and graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance, then in 2023 with a Master of Music degree also in Clarinet Performance. Throughout my life, I have been involved with district festivals, summer music festivals, youth orchestras/bands, and professional freelance gigs.
My first student was recommended to me by a former mentor of mine. I remember being nervous but I had trusted my knowledge that I’ve built up in order to provide the best instruction that I can. Within 2-3 lessons, I realized how gratifying it is to witness and be a part of a student’s progression. That was the moment when I knew that I enjoy teaching. I have been teaching for over 1 year now, having worked with about 10 different students from various backgrounds. I found that lessons work best if they are engaging and guided towards the student’s goals.
To be a better musician requires a strong solid foundation of the fundamentals. Clarinet maintenance, equipment, reeds. Body posture, finger position, embouchure. Musical understanding and expression, scales, etudes, and other repertoire. When I meet a new or prospective student, I first evaluate where in their training are they coming from. Beginner - Amateur - Advanced and so forth. Depending on what I initially hear by their playing I would advise them accordingly and inquire what they hope to achieve out of the lessons.
Each student is unique. They require their own method and pace of training. My hope is to help the student reach their goals while still enjoying their time practicing for it. The routine that works best for the student will prove itself over time depending on the student. It may be to work one way for one student but not so much for another student. Practice does get tiresome and so I like to provide many different ways to practice that will help keep sessions more engaged and eager to challenge ourselves. Soon enough the small objectives we assign to ourselves will add up and we will be reaching real improvement!
