Overview:
Hello, I am currently finishing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone performance at the University of North Texas and am a teaching fellow there instructing undergraduate saxophone majors. I was originally accepted as a multiple woodwind major there as I have played flute and clarinet on cruise ships and jazz gigs as well as flute and clarinet classical works. In addition to UNT I have students at Richland College, Melissa ISD and Richardson ISD that I continue to teach. As an instructor I aim to meet each student where they are at and help them grow with individualized assignments and instruction.
EXPERIENCE
Before attending the University of North Texas I was a band director, jazz band director, chorus director, free lance performer and cruise ship musician. In New York the band directors instruct all instruments in group lessons so I am familiar with technique, tone, tuning, fingerings etc...for all band instruments. My teaching and performing specialty is woodwinds, namely saxophone, flute and clarinet in both classical and jazz genres. I am a versatile performer and instructor having won international classical concerto competitions, toured with party bands and performed with professional jazz orchestras.
METHODS USED
I aim to keep instruction individualized while working on technique, reading ability, practice techniques, tuning, mindset, lesson book/etudes and solo repertoire.
Beginners: Simple scales and arpeggios, lesson book, internalized counting, pulse, knowing counting internally, simple solo repertoire, listening to examples of solo repertoire, practice habits
Intermediate: Full range scales, lesson book, rhythmic consistency, counting internally, solo repertoire, listening, practice habits, practicing incrementally
Advanced: Full range scales and 3rds, even rhythmic flow, counting internally, use of metronome, listening, effective practice mindset and techniques
College level - I teach at UNT and Richland College
LESSON STYLE
The first thing a teacher must do is figure out how to motivate a student to practice. This can be done differently for different students. I will list some things that I have found that work.
1) Set a practice schedule/timer/alarm
2) I work on mindset and practice techniques to reduce practice session frustration/anxiety and increase positivity and feel good emotions
3) The student selects songs to practice in addition to scales, lesson book or repertoire
4) Parental support and priority
5) Listening to music outside of lesson
6) Practice one concept at a time
7) Limit faster passages to smaller groups of notes, practice slow with different patterns.
8) more in lesson!.......
I find the most joy in teaching when students are proud of what they have learned, accomplished or performed.
