BM, Belmont University, Commercial Music (Music Business Emphasis)
I'm a freelance musician, transcriptionist and composer located in Nashville. Music is constantly present in my life. I love exploring new music and exploring new avenues to be creative in music. I graduated from Belmont University in 2014. Previous to living in Nashville, I lived in Wisconsin for 18 years. While I was there I played in a symphonic metal band called Warseid. Once I moved to Nashville, I started studying jazz, classical guitar, playing country, exploring avant-garde music as well as bluegrass. Once I graduated college, I went straight into the shark tank that is Nashville.
I have been teaching Skype students for the last year. I'll teach whatever the student is eager to learn. We could cover anything from a song on the radio, to superimposition to flatpicking. I am at the mercy of the student.
To me, the most important part of music is listening. For my beginners, what chord is happening is this song? How do I play that chord? How do I remember all the chords to this song? I will encourage my more advanced students to listen to the masters, as well as their own playing. What is the master player doing in this recording? How can the student apply that same concept in their own playing? Why does something sound the way that it does? Why does it work?
George Kochavitsky wrote a book called "A Scientific Approach to Playing the Piano". In which, he says the piano is not the instrument. It's a machine. You are the instrument. Your body and mind is what stores and processes musical information. The more you can think about music without your instrument in front of you, the more musically fluent you will become.
