Du Quoin Marching Indians, Du Quoin Concert Band, Du Quoin Jazz Band
I am a motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my passion for drums and percussion. Performing with other talented musicians in many diverse settings has been an excellent experience of my life as a musician. I have learned many great things in playing outside of my comfort zone, breaking barriers of musical genres with a keen focus on dynamics.
I first began giving lessons briefly after I graduated from Du Quoin highschool in 2009, where I played snare drum as a Marching Indian! Playing day after day in the music room setup in my garage had finally caught the ear of multiple children around the neighborhood. I want to inspire and encourage anyone and everyone with an interest in music to pick up and play an instrument. Drums are an instrument of many languages; jazz, latin, rock, pop, etc. It is a language that with dedication and time, anyone can learn to speak and join the conversation of music! I want to encourage and motivate students of all ages to develop regular practice on a consistent schedule to progress and gain knowledge on their journey to becoming musicians. Most of all, I believe in my teaching they will develop a strong passion and comfort in their instrument!
With all beginning students, I typically start with very minimal basics. Proper stretches, warm-up techniques (reudiments to help strengthen their dynamics), correct posture and the over all comfort of beginning. Once the student has progressed and understands the fundamentals, next would be reading music and counting time. When moving beyond the fundamentals, I try to focus more on the particular interest of the student. Is there a certain genre, a certain song, a certain player? In guiding the instruction accordingly to engage in a fun, motivated lesson, no matter their ability level is the most important part of the lesson for students of any age.
I want to set realistic goals and contribute the growing students over all passion for their instrument! The importance of the student progressing at his or her own pace makes each accomplishment motivational, in turn making the student eager to learn. By learning from the student, their inspirations, their goals, I can successfully shape my instruction to better benefit the student!
