I have been playing guitar for 15 years. Played in an original band as well as a Nickelback Tribute band that has played in Texas and Trinidad. I also have gone to college with an emphasis in music including music theory as well as guitar. I am calm and relaxed. My approach is very laid back, yet strict enough to demand real learning and progress. My favorite music is rock, hard rock, and metal. Those styles also cross over into blues, alternative, and folk styles. I think learning should be fun and wanted by the learner.
I've had students ranging from 12 years to 50+. All of them have been the same. They all need specific individual teaching instruction with someone who can discern their needs and learning speed. I've taken many lessons with many different instructors in my beginnings of playing guitar. Each teacher found different areas in which I was lacking practice. I have learned from my mistakes and now use them to my advantage by knowing what to look for in my students. I have also taken music theory, guitar, music appreciation, and basic music courses in college that have given me a wealth of information to work with.
If you think you've practiced enough, practice 100 times more. I make sure you know what you want out of your instrument. I need to know your goals so I can tailor my teaching style to your specific needs. Are you a hobbyist? Do you want to play live on stage? Are you a recording musician? Or do you simply want to write music and need an instrument to assist you? I will only give you more to practice if you are actually ready. I will not allow shortcuts. You must be 100% ready to move on by showing that you really do want to learn.
I let you show me how you play your instrument so I can evaluate your weaknesses. I will work with you on your weaknesses so that you can achieve the goal you have for your instrument. I can make you aware of what you CAN learn so that you can tell me what you WANT to learn. There are many things in guitar that require a lot of focus. The fundamentals are very important to my teaching style. The small things that most beginners think aren't important are very important to the success of the student.
