2015 NATS Musical Theatre Category 2nd place
Hello! I just graduated from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music in 2019 with a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance. I have been in over 60 productions in my life, including concerts, operas, operettas, musical theatre performances, and talent shows. I absolutely love singing and am very excited for the opportunity to start teaching! I have had extensive training in my craft, and have been taking voice lessons for 12 years. I am classically trained, but am very interested in other genres, such as rock, punk, alternative, and musical theatre styles of singing. Although I am mainly a vocalist, I am able to offer introductory-intermediate lessons in piano! Which I took for 16 years off and on.
While I haven't had a lot of experience in the teaching field, I am very excited for the opportunity to start. I have taught trial voice lessons before, as well as taken a Pedagogy class about proper technique in order to teach others! I have had a lot of experience in teaching in other ways, though, because I have worked at daycares for about 4 years of my life! I have taught a lot of young children in many fields, including art, music, and basic language skills. My teaching style is adhered to the student themselves. I don't want anybody to feel like they need to copy someone else's singing style! I want to help students grow into their own unique voices, using a variety of diction techniques, as well as call and repeat types of exercises. IN terms of teaching piano, I have taught piano to beginners before! I start by teaching them the names of the keys, a bit of music theory, and then going from there!
Some methods I would like to include in my teaching are introduction/development of IPA, which is International Phonetic Alphabet. The International Phonetic Alphabet is crucial for knowing how to sing correctly in a variety of langauges. I have experience singing in English, German, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish. Using IPA, it can give you the correct pronunciation of words in other languages. I have found IPA extremely helpful in my experience as a vocalist. I would like to focus on a little bit of music theory and help students learn how to read music if they don't know already. I also encourage students to sing the way they think a phrase should be sung, and then dissecting the phrase to help them understand how to make it sound even better!
I am so excited to see my students grow in their vocal craft. Using correct placement and vocal methods, I hope for all of my students to develop healthy, fluid, and consistency of sound flow! I promise I am patient, kind, empathetic, and I understand that while getting proper vocal technique is important, there is nothing more important than mental health. If a student comes in feeling stressed out or unwell, I will do my best to bring them into a more positive mindset. I want students to know that I am more than just a teacher, but a mentor and, most importantly, a human being. My style is patient, flexible, and adhering to the student's ability and experience. I can't wait to meet each of you!
