Hello my name is Brent, I have studied music for over 40 years. Saxophone was my first instrument to learn, since then I have learned guitar, piano, bass, drums, and vocals. In middle school I played in concert band (second chair), in high school I played in concert band and jazz band (first chair), in college I played in jazz band (first chair). Also , I received the opportunity to be first chair in All-County and All-State jazz band. After that I was in many Pop/rock bands as a soloist. Within that time I have taken on many students to tutor with which I have very good feedback.
I have taught many genres of music which include jazz, blues, pop, rock, concert and marching. I also have taught many ages that range from 10 years old to whatever for over 20+ years. I usually teach one on one (private lessons). I mainly teach Saxophone because that is my most experienced instrument but, I have also taught guitar, drums, piano, bass, and voice. And I also teach music theory which I think is very important because it teaches you to know how music is constructed. I love sharing the knowledge of music with others because I think it is magical to make something beautiful from nothing.
First of all I feel the student should be comfortable and relaxed with playing music you shouldn't be tense (hence the pocket). Secondly, they should know every aspect of their instrument. And thirdly, they should know how to hold and play their instrument (with fingers or mouth). also through some music theory in. But, foremost I want the student to enjoy playing so, they can pick what ever they want to learn. But, as a warmup or in practice I suggest doing some scales. I teach how to construct all scales.
In the initial meeting with a student I talk through what they want to accomplish what genre's of music the would like to play and what kind of personality they have. Then I have more of an understanding of what direction to go in to personalize the teaching. I believe very much in the saying "there's only one way to Carnegie Hall PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE". I don't force structure and scales etc. I think music should be enjoyed either playing or listening so, music has to have some work to do but, all and all the reward of having the knowledge of music and being able to produce it from yourself is one of the highest levels of feeling.
