Produced Hundreds of Songs Professionally
Greetings, my name is Brett. I've had a passion for the intricacies of rhythm since I was a boy. As a teen, I began playing drums and progressed at a highly advanced rate. My teachers would assign one page out of a book for the weekly lessons. I'd learn the entire book that same evening. It wasn't long before I attended the FUI Studio Jazz and Performance program. I realized that I conveived of rhythm in a way that wasn't being taught in schools or universities. I later used this conception to develop a unique style of teaching rhythm that will help my students take the same fast track that I did.
My experience spans 20 years, from Miami to LA. I have played music with, and recorded with, Grammy Award winning artists. I have been a performing musician since High School and have played 1000's of gigs. I have produced 100's of songs for dozens of recording artists as well as having written music for Sony and Warner Brothers. Meanwhile, I found the time to teach/mentor over 100 music and production students while developing an original style off teaching rhythm that can be applied to ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
All students will begin with an assessment of their current skills and a short discussion about their musical goals. This will gauge the trajectory of the lessons. Beginning students will start with basic stick technique, counting exercises, and rudimentary drum set beats. Lessons remain fun and engaging with the use of tailor made Drumless Playalong Tracks. Using my "In One" method, intermediate students will start immeidately on a customized lesson plan to refine their sense of rhythm from the bottom up. We will focus on linear drumming in all styles to create the kind of interdepence needed for more advanced genre as well as creative improvising. We will discuss the similarities and differences between the different genre and refer to musical examples so the student learns to play idiomatically. Advanced students will "relearn" the basics in a way that will prepare them for Expert Level Drumming. More advanced students will delve into the world of odd time signatures, odd groupings, time signature changes, beat displacements, rhythmic illusions, metric modulations. This is VERY FUN. In my experience, students who reach this level of rhythmic awareness excel in other areas of music, including music production, audio editing and Sound Design. A benfit to my method is that each student has the option to incorporate recording and production techniques into their personalized curriculum. Having a solid foundation in the art of recording music is a highly marketable skill that will go a long way in todays modern music business.
Every good drummer knows the key to success in music: listening skills. I listen to and pay close attention to my students. An education in music is a journey that students must ultimately walk alone. Learning music makes new connections in the brain and can amplify success in other areas of life. My job is to provide the tools, support and inspiration that every students needs to make that journey. Each student has different abilities, different drives and different ambitions. Every student is on their own musical path. As a teacher, I zero-in on those abilities and guide students toward the pursuit of their goals.
