I devoted my life to music at the age of 12. I had just won a competition to be a soloist on a European tour with a symphonic wind ensemble. At the age of 16, I played Carnegie Hall. Music has taken me across the US and to Europe many times. I went to three universities -- Indiana, North Texas, and University of Redlands on full music scholarships. I have a master's degree in composition. My wise teacher for that was Barney Childs, himself a protege of Aaron Copland. My compositions have been broadcast in over 120 countries and I have been teaching since I was 16 years old.
My teaching experience dates back to my late high school days, meaning I've been teaching for over forty years. I have taught trumpet, trombone, tuba, euphonium, piano, bass (electric and standup) as well as theory and composition. I hold a Master's degree in composition -- studying with Barney Childs, a protege of Aaron Copland. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule and doing regular performances are hallmarks of my approach to teaching as they help the student progress and gain confidence. My teaching method is organic... that is, I approach the student carefully to learn their strengths and weak areas. I then tailor my teaching style and materials to suit each individual.
For beginning students and children, I have a number of different books that I chose from. They are different books that approach each student in unique ways. I tailor Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I approach the student carefully to learn their strengths and weak areas. I then tailor my teaching style and materials to suit each individual.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I have had many successful students who have performed at high levels.
