I grew up in a musical family and began with the piano and violin then took up singing when I was 15. I found that I could excel and after living two years in Bolivia, came back and studied voice with a well traveled professional baritone in Seattle. He encouraged me and then I was able to apprentice at the Lyric Opera in Chicago for 2 years. It prepared me to be a professional singer, which I have done for over 30 years. I have sung over 60 leading roles in opera but also have sung a dozen roles in Broadway musicals, something I like very much.
I have been teaching on and off for 30 years but especially the past 15. I was Head of Vocal Studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2004-2009 and then at the Macau Polytechnic Institute. I also presented Masterclasses in China and around Asia. I have been teaching since returning to New York City and several of my students now have professional management to help them in their careers. I believe I am adept at teaching many voices, whether male of female. I have also been able to mentor some young and gifted students.
My method is to find common ground with the student so that they can relax. Relaxation, emotional and physical, is very important for singing. After that, I teach breath support, vowels, style and languages. I speak 5 Western languages and some Mandarin Chinese. I enjoy showing how to use vowels within technique to be consistent and keep your voice healthy. I think how I teach is holistic, fun, and supportive. Whether studying for a school competition, an exam from Trinity or Royal Academy, or preparing for an audition, I will do my best to prepare you for success.
I enjoy success stories. As a teacher, I enjoy seeing my students successful. I try to take very little credit, especially in public, because ultimately, it is the students who get out on stage and put themselves on the line. As a professional singer, I understand what they need to do to succeed and will support them the best I can in fulfilling their dreams. We will work together to define what is wanted, the dreams and ideas, then we will put them into reachable goals. This is a process which is different for every student, which is part of the fun and satisfaction that I receive by seeing their success.
