Overview:
I have been a music lover ever since I can remember. Playing music has been one of the greatest gifts I have ever received, and I love sharing that gift with my students. I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and from University of North Texas with a Master of Music in Percussion Performance. I have played a wide variety of styles from classical, to rock, to Caribbean steel pan, and I draw from all of my experiences to help students realize their goals regardless of the styles they are interested in. My greatest passion is to use music to help students reach their highest potential as musicians and as people.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons when I was in college, about 20 years ago. After college, I began a long career of teaching in junior high and high school band programs. My teaching experience encompasses everything from young students in private lessons, to large marching and concert band programs, to college level private lessons. I have high expectations of students, but my primary interest is to help students reach their individual goals, and most of all have fun! I enjoy teaching students of all ages, young, old or in between.
METHODS USED
It is important to me to get to know each student, and to custom tailor the curriculum for him or her. Method books appropriate to the instrument and level of skill are a large part of my teaching, and I also try to use technology and muti-media to make instruction more interesting and relevant. I use teaching strategies and techniques that help students progress faster with less frustration. I emphasize reading music versus learning by note, and continually look for ways to make lessons interesting, creative, and fun.
LESSON STYLE
The most important things to see, as a teacher, are students enjoying playing music, reaching their goals, and to see them shine through their successes. I set realistic goals for students. If there is a feeling of success for the student early in the process, then motivation takes care of itself. Regular practice is an essential part of success in any endeavor, but staying inspired a light-hearted takes the work out the work, and makes learning music fun from beginning to end. I've had my fair share of uninspiring teachers over the years, and I strive to be a teacher that inspires students to be great musicians and great people.
