Overview:
I am an experienced trombonist located in Raleigh, NC. I have established an exceptional playing career spanning from Middle and High School, having won chairs in multiple All-District honor bands, to performing with numerous ensembles spanning genres such as classical, jazz, and funk. Currently, I actively perform with the Greensboro Concert Band, Tobacco Road Trombones, and the Kings of Swing Jazz Orchestra. I have also previously performed with the Raleigh Civic Symphony, New South Funk Band, and assisted the Green Street Baptist Church orchestra and jazz band for special performances. As a teacher my aim is to help students gain mastery in the five fundamental categories, Tone, Intonation, Slide Technique, Articulation, and Music, required to become an exceptional player.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience extends back to my high school years when I began working with fellow trombonists to help them improve their playing. More recently, I have picked up teaching again and currently work with local students in the Piedmont Triad area. As I have stated previously, my teaching method focuses heavily on fundamentals and technique, as it is my belief that having a strong foundation will provide the student with the tools necessary to have success on the instrument. I work with children and adults of who range from just starting on the trombone to intermediate skill level. While focusing on fundamentals, it is also my belief that you have to make lessons fun for the student, therefore, I try to incorporate into the lesson musical repertoire that appeals to the students own musical interests.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I start by focusing on developing a good sound and ensuring that the student knows what a good sound is and what it is not. Air is the foundation of a good sound so, in my introductory lessons, I focus heavily on breathing and air support. This is a foundation that is continued throughout the time the student continues to take lessons. I then begin to work with the student on fundamentals such as articulation, slide control, intonation, etc. As the student improves, I gradually increase the difficulty and begin to incorporate a little more variety into the lesson. For intermediate level students, my focus is mostly on correcting and deficiencies in technique and polishing their musical skill.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is to get the student engaged during the lesson. I want the student to have fun and develop a true passion and understanding for music and the instrument. This is one of the reasons why the musical repertoire chosen is based on the students musical preferences rather than only playing generic tunes from the method book. It is my belief that if students can take the fundamentals they learn and apply it by playing music that is actually fun and enjoyable for them, it makes the experience of lessons more effective.
