Overview:
I am Grammy Nominated bassist who makes a living playing bass and teaching. I love watching my students improve their playing. In 2018 I received my Masters of Music Performance on Upright Bass from California State University of Fullerton. I've had the privilege to travel all over the world playing music and count this as one of my most treasured life experiences. I love to impart the knowledge that I have gained in my over 24 years of playing to my students and love to see them grow musically. My technique for teaching varies from student to student as each one is different and unique.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started in my undergrad career when I started taking students on part time. I supplement my live performances income with teaching because I love to teach and see my students' love of the bass increase with each lesson. I like to tell my students to practice everyday even if it is only for 10 minutes, because it gets them into a routine. I work with students to learn the material they want to learn and provide supplemental material when asked to do so. I like to keep the lessons interesting to the student so that they have fun while learning the bass.
METHODS USED
For beginning students I like to get them to have proper technique when it comes to the right and left hand placement on the bass. I also like them to get familiar with a sense of time so I use a metronome and teach them about how the beat works along with playing the notes on the bass. For intermediate students I gauge their knowledge of music theory such as scales and arpeggios and work on those along with tackling songs that they might want to play. For the advanced student I like them to learn melodies to songs and be able to come up with bass lines to those songs and eventually be able to improvise on those songs.
LESSON STYLE
I love to see my students progress throughout our lessons and encourage them to learn at a pace that is suitable for them. I do so by giving them assignments that I know they can tackle during the week. I acknowledge their progress with positive reinforcement as such feedback is important to a student's sense of achievement. This positive reinforcement feeds into the student's desire to keep learning and makes it more enjoyable for both them and I. With each lesson I learn more about the student and can plan subsequent lessons accordingly.
