I teach flute and violin lessons throughout the Kansas City area and Lawrence, KS. I recently completed my Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance at the University of Kansas where I served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant. I serve as Principal Flute of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and sub with the Kansas City Symphony regularly. I am also the music director and conductor of the Kansas City Flute Choir. I teach from my home in the Waldo neighborhood in Kansas City, at the Morse Church in Overland Park, at the student's home, and online.
I have been teaching private lessons for over ten years to students aged 8 to 80 and with all levels of experience and expertise. Lessons will always include work on fundamentals and technique in addition to the piece or pieces. I try to make sure my student always feels like he or she has accomplished something in the lesson. Although I am regimented in the technique, I like to give my students options when deciding on a piece to work on. I encourage my middle school and high school students to audition for the honor bands and orchestras and prepare piece for solo and ensemble contest.
For young beginning flute students, I typically work from Rubank's Elementary Method and supplement with my own exercises and additional pieces. After the first year or so, I supplement with technical exercises and the Melodious and Progressive Studies and move on to solos from a number of other books. For violin and viola students, I typically work from the Suzuki books and supplement with scales, shifting exercises, and etudes. While there is progression of technical and musical concepts to work on, I tailor specific music assigned to the student's interests and needs.
I love being a musician, and I try to impart a bit of that passion in each lesson. I encourage my students to be excited about the music because that is what will motivate that student to practice and make the process enjoyable. I try to present new ideas clearly and in small chunks to help students feel capable and successful. I always want to show my students that they are capable of more than they realize! I also work with students regularly on how to practice in order to make the most of their time in between lessons.
He’s very nice and knowledgeable.
