I am a passionate music educator who has been playing clarinet since 2007. I am experienced in all areas of music, but my passion is band, particularly clarinet and saxophone. I earned my Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Baker University and am looking into earning my Masters. I have performed in pit orchestras for musicals on clarinet, bass clarinet, and saxophone. I have also performed with orchestras and many bands on Bb clarinet, A clarinet, and Eb clarinet. I do have experience in jazz on clarinet and alto/tenor saxophone. Teaching private lessons is very enjoyable for me because I love seeing my students progress on their instrument.
So far, I have only taught one beginner clarinet player when I was in college. I have taken many courses on teaching and feel confident that I can teach players of any level on clarinet and saxophone. My goal is for students to love the instrument(s) they chose. I am well-versed in classical and jazz music when it comes to clarinet and saxophone. I have also played in many pit orchestras and normal orchestras, so I do have experience in other areas as well. I am looking forward to working with my students to make them better performers!
My methods very from student to student. If students have already started playing their instrument in school, I will work with them on the method book that they use in school. If students do not have a method book, I will work with them on what is provided or I will find a book that best suits the student’s needs. For more advanced students, I believe scale work is very important to improving on your instrument. I will also look into more advanced method books for each student. Aside from that, working with students on concert music or solo pieces can be a very helpful way for them to gain skills on their instrument while also gaining more confidence in their playing ability.
I believe that students move at their own pace, especially when it comes to instruments. What may come easily to one student may not be as simple for another. I believe working on fundamentals and mastering those on the chosen instruments is the most important thing for any level of player. Once fundamentals are locked in, we can begin working on other skills/music. My methods of teaching for one student may not be the methods I use for another. My teaching techniques will change from student to student so they learn in the way that suits them.
