I am a driven and dedicated voice teacher who enjoys learning the voices of different singers. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Claflin University in 2017 and I recently finished my Master of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Southern Illinois University. As a student at SIU I was a member of the Concert Choir, a teaching assistant for a music understanding course and I taught voice lessons to students with many different majors. My studio is open for anyone who wants to learn how to use their voice in the most efficient way.
My teaching experience began in 2016 as a young college student. In my graduate career I taught voice lessons for four semesters and each year I learned how to develop and manage my own personal studio. I strongly recommend practice logs to track student's progress and to make the student aware of the things that require more attention. I also invite each student to inform me about their interests in music and I tailor the lessons around that. It is very important to me that the student is able to enjoy the learning process!
For all students, I begin with fundamental and foundational elements of singing such as breathing, musical terms, elements of music, etc. I use The Singing Book which includes instructional learning and solo repertoire, and can be used for any level singer. More specifically, I create my own lesson plan according to the student. In my planning, I consider vocalises, style, student's preferences and interests, breathing warm-ups, and private practice techniques. I have found that most students do not know how to practice and I feel as a teacher it is my job to provide practice techniques to my students.
I enjoy seeing my students make progress when taking lessons with me. It is a joy to see them conquer their goals and increase their love for music! I hold an inviting teaching environment that I want to be welcoming, comfortable and a space to make errors. Many of us try to avoid errors but when we are in the learning process they are bound to appear and they remind us that we are human. I understand that my duty is to serve my student, and I understand that each student is different. I make it my priority to provide instruction that will inspire and motivate myself students to keep seeking music!
