MA, Music, San Francisco State University BM, Composition, San Francisco State University
Overview:
I primarily teach the saxophone to younger students, and in this area I emphasize the fundamentals of tone production and the development of the musical imagination. My thinking here is simple: if you understand how the instrument works and you can imagine how something should sound, it takes only a matter of experimentation and diligence to achieve your goals. If the student is prepared to do this, I am there as an enthusiastic supporter and facilitator.
EXPERIENCE
Since 2005, I have been teaching saxophone and clarinet privately to students of all ages, with a high rate of retention in recent years. I have also been appointed as saxophone instructor at San Francisco State University where am instructing college-level saxophone players.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method. Having established the fundamentals, I like to introduce the student to a series of etudes and more challenging repertoire as the student develops. For adult students, I like to find out what they are intersted in and work from there, but I still stress fundamentals.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style involves a lot of listening, both on my part and on the student's. I like to listen to a student play, give them feedback, then listen again in an effort to get the student to listen as well.
