Music Minor, Ohio Wesleyan University
2012 - Winner of battle of the bands, Ohio Wesleyan University
I graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University as a Music Minor. I have been playing guitar for 15 years, and taught lesson for last eight years. After performing in lots of different venues, I have had opportunities to incorporate musical theory with live performances. Playing different genre's of music such as reggae, jazz, blues, rock, progressive rock and metal, I have become versatile in my playing style and can teach people not only on a specific genre but many. Recently, I have been teaching in home as I believe students learn more by seeing their teacher play guitar live than any other way.
My teaching experience goes back to my school days, when I began teaching my junior students. After teaching guitar for 8 years, I got to meet many students with different goals and skill levels. My students are always encouraged to play in a band, which help them to grow quickly as a musician. I believe sharing your musical knowledge is probably the best occupation anyone can have. The more students enjoys the guitar lesson the more input a students gives, which is vital to learn guitar techniques and skills.
I teach students the basic guitar skills and musicianship. I believe with a good foundation students can progress really quickly. For beginning students, I teach them basic chord structures and chord progressions. For intermediate student, I teach them scales, arpeggios and advance chord progression. And for advance students, I teach them different chord voicing, use of arpeggios during improvisation and modal theory. In addition, I try to find out goals of the students and make sure they reach their goal in required time.
I encourage students to develop their ears, by giving them ample of exercises and homework that will eventually help in ear training. I help them to setup a realistic goals for each week so that students can see their accomplishment by themselves. Music is not only about playing alone, its get more interesting and creative when played in duet or trio or even in a band. Since, I always learned playing by looking at other people live in front of me and jamming with them, I encourage them to learn from the person in front of them rather than just play at home in front of their computers.
