I'm an independent and hard working woman who loves music and working with students. I graduated from San Diego State University with a desire to work with children, and at some point my path led me a different way. I had the opportunity to meet Michael Cavanaugh and was shown how much music influenced my life. I kept in touch with him recently, which was the one thing that motivated me to get back into teaching. I love spending my time composing songs and singing in choir.
My teaching experience dates back to my college years when I taught lessons at a studio, primarily working with young children. I met a fellow music teacher in a class of mine and she brought me to a store where I had my own private studio downstairs with students ranging from different ages. I worked with so many students, some whom stayed with me for the entire time I was working as a teacher. I love motivating them to enjoy learning and encourage them to pick a song they would love to learn. Every year, I would encourage them to participate in our Christmas program.
I encourage my students practice at least a minimum of 30 minutes a day. I don't have one particular book I work from as I see every student is different. I do require that they have a theory book because I believe learning the theory is just as important. Regardless of their age, I encourage them to find a piece within their level that they would enjoy learning to play.
Watching someone's face light up the minute they completed a song with small amount of mistakes brings a smile to my face. I remind them it's not about learning the song and mastering it right away, but rather taking time to be comfortable with what they are doing. I get to know my students so I know how fast or slow we need to work and what interests them so I can motivate them along the way.
