BA, Sweet Briar College, Music MAT, Sweet Briar College, Vocal-Choral Prek-12
I am a devoted and caring instructor who wants to share my love of music through teaching. I graduated in 2016 from Sweet Briar College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. In 2017, I graduated with my MAT from Sweet Briar College and am certified to teach Vocal-Choral and General Music Prek-12th grade. Performing during grade school and college has been one of the many rewarding experiences of my life as a musician. I have had opportunities to sing in the chorus for the Magic Flute for Opera on the James.
My teaching experience began while in college. I taught private piano lessons while as a nanny for a year. In the 2017-2018 school year, I taught in Greensville County Public Schools as an elementary music teacher and enjoyed teaching my beginning students classical and modern music. I encourage my students to regularly practice their instruments (20 minutes a day) in order to progress in their musical journey. My main goal is to make sure my students are engaged. When teaching, I learn about my student's interests and go with the direction of what they are passionate about in order to make the lessons enjoyable. I use classical and modern music in order to motivate my student to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I am not doing my job! I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages!
For beginning piano/recorder students who are children, I start with Primer Level - Lesson Book: Piano Adventures and Recorder Karate. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For beginning voice students, I find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For adults, I will also learn more about their interests to keep them passionate about learning music.
My favorite part of my position is seeing my students develop and progress in their passion for music! It is critical that each student practices at his or her own pace. I set realistic goals for each lesson in order to make it fun and engaging. I acknowledge their accomplishments to fuel a student's desire for progress and eagerness to learn more. By learning more about my students' interests, I can tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Ultimately, if my students can see and feel passionate about music, I know I am doing my job as a music teacher.
