I believe that with enough passion and dedication anyone can be a musician. Hard work and my love for music have had me teaching private lessons, classes, and ensembles since 2003. My primary focus is in clarinet and composition. But my study and expertise spans also to voice, ukulele, and guitar. I enjoy playing music from several genres including rock, pop, musical theater, Klezmer, band, country, folk and classical. I am state certified music educator and have been conducting a children's choir in my community since 2013.
My teaching experience is as varied as my interests. I currently teach music and band at a local school. Since 2003, I have taught private lessons in Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 18 and I have both started beginners and seen my long-term students graduate high school. I have taught Elementary General Music for two years. For five years I conducted a children's choir in my community. I was also an instructor at the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp, a counselor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Music Mentor of the Resident College of Arts in Humanities at MSU. I served as a woodwind specialist for marching bands for several years. I previously taught classes on music technology and composition at MSU and assisted in Early Childhood music classes at CMS. For two years I had an assistantship with MSU teaching private lessons in music composition and solo teaching classes on introduction to music technology. I love to teach children and teens! No age is too young, as long as the child is ready to learn and excited about music, I will welcome them into my studio with open arms.
The first lesson is both an assessment and an opportunity for my student and I to get to know each other. Based on the student's level, personality, instrument, and interests I have a variety of ideas about beginning methods. Either way, most of my students do focus on scales, exercises, and songs. My philosophy is to teach the student, not JUST the music. Also, I believe in "comprehensive" musicians-ones that can perform, understand, write, and create. Because of this, all of my instruction connects to music theory and song writing/composition.
My style largely depends on the student and his/her needs and interests. I enjoy using rewards-based encouragement, especially for younger students. The rewards I give are always musical and I usually let the student choose. For example, one of the rewards for consistent practice, learning songs, and listening to recordings is the opportunity to write a parody song. We listen to a few examples and analyze what makes them work. Then I guide the student in writing their own using the end of the next few lessons. I like to be silly and have fun with my teaching but I am a hard worker and will push the student to always do his/her best.
