I came up through the Fairfax County band program. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to "give back" to this as a public school teacher. My wish now is to help as many current band students as I can. I relocated from Virginia and am looking to establish a presence in Montgomery County.
Ironically, I have school-aged child instruction experience in a classroom setting, not as a music teacher, but in American Sign Language! Long story. But I did have a few percussion students at the end of my college years.
I like Ted Reed's book, "Syncopation", and Haskell Harr's book "Podemski's Snare Drum Method." But I may be willing to work with a similar book you have already purchased. I'll spend more time on "rudimental drumming" for those who aspire to play in a marching situation, and less time on it for those only in a concert band setting.
Positive. No gimmicks, no shortcuts. I get the student to think for himself. In a sense we are ALL "self-taught players." My job is primarily correcting bad habits and introducing new material and techniques.
