Overview:
I am a graduate of the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Studies. I have had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with artists all over the United States and, more recently, in Paris, France. I am a strong advocate for the arts, and being able to express yourself fully through it. This very well includes music. I feel that the way music is taught today does not emphasize the creative aspects of music enough. I am very passionate about changing the way students are taught music, discovering ways to allow my students to have a strong balance between creativity and technique.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching music informally back in my high school days, leading students in my section who had difficult times with their instruments. This led me to become more interested and passionate about teaching students in need of proper guidance. I began volunteering at after school programs, at risk youth programs, and local bands in my town to contribute to those in need. While in college, I began teaching student lessons formally. Many of my students were able to move up to honor bands and ensembles that they never were able to before. These accomplishments gave me the drive to continue to guide students to realize their full potential.
METHODS USED
For students, both children and adults, I like to put great emphasis on ear training and improvisation. Although I emphasize ear training and improvisation, I do not neglect sight reading and learning repertoire. I make sure to balance these two as well as make sure the student is practicing songs they enjoy as well!
LESSON STYLE
I like to teach from an understanding that depth is more important than scope, meaning thoroughly practicing a single piece of music is more effective than skimming over many things at once. This allows more mindful practicing and mastery. It also allows me to find my students' most effective learning methods and cater to their specific learning needs. I like to make goals for my student using this way of practicing. I know this way of learning leads to more realistic goals and positive results, fueling students with the desire to learn more and progress.
