Overview:
I believe in the power of music and truly believe that anyone can learn. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. In 2015, I earned my Masters of Education degree from Walden University. I have had the opportunity to perform in countries all over the world including Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and more. I am currently a high school music teacher and band director. I also play at multiple local churches and am an active member of the Houston Pride Band this season. I am an active member Texas Music Educators Association and an alumni member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.
EXPERIENCE
I have over 10 years of experience as a private instructor as I began teaching private lesson to middle schoolers as a senior in high school. I continued teaching younger musicians as I worked to earn my B.A. Music and M.Ed.. I am currently a high school band director and music teacher. When teaching total beginners, I like to start with a method book. I also spend a great deal of time discussing the importance of breath and practicing breathing gym exercises. I encourage my students of all skill levels to perform publicly whether through competitions, recitals, or paid gigs. Students enjoy showing off what they've worked hard to accomplish.
METHODS USED
With my wind instrument and percussion students, I like to start with a method book. My favorites include Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I find that, especially for younger students, this is a great way to introduce beginner theory while learning to apply it to their playing. I spend a great deal of time discussing the importance of breath and practicing breathing gym exercises. My piano method book of choice varies depending on the skill level of the student. I require my students to complete practice journals as an accountability piece. I encourage consistent and effective practice. My lessons are always full of energy and interactive. The student will get out of our lessons what they put in.
LESSON STYLE
There is nothing more inspiring and rewarding than watching a student grow. For that reason, I meet students where they are. After an initial assessment of knowledge and skill, I began tailoring lessons for each student individually depending on their skill level. Typical lessons would include a relevant theory mini lesson, teacher playing demonstration, and teacher guided practice. The student is expected to complete independent practice on their own before our next scheduled lesson. Students will know the concepts that must be mastered before moving on to higher level skills. If a student struggles with a particular concept I will reteach using differentiated instruction to help bridge the gaps.
