2014-15 New England Conservatory Honors Woodwind Quintet
I am an experienced flutist and teacher currently serving the DC Metro area, and I love teaching students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners picking up the flute for the very first time to advanced students preparing for County Band auditions and beyond, to adult students interested in learning a new skill. I received my Master of Music in Flute Performance from the New England Conservatory, and Bachelor of Music in Performance from George Mason University, and am continually improving my skills as a flutist by taking auditions for orchestras and festivals around the country.
I have experience teaching flute and piccolo students ages 6-60, from brand new beginners to advanced high school students and beyond. I have worked with students in a variety of settings, from one on one private lessons, small group sessions, to flute sectional coaching. My primary goal is always for lessons to be a fun and positive experience at any level. While I emphasize technique and fundamentals at all levels because I believe these are essential to develop the skill required learning any instrument, I always like to end lessons with a skill appropriate duet, because the best part of music making is being able to create and share it with others.
I believe learning an instrument is a very personalized process, and tailor the materials I use to the skill level and personal goals of each student. For brand new beginners, I typically start with the first Suzuki Flute book, Trevor Wye Beginning book for the Flute, and depending on the individual may begin with some of my own exercises that I write out for the student. For more intermediate to advanced students, I typically like to work out of the Selected Studies and Advanced Rubank books, as some of the more commonly asked audition excerpts for County/State Band typically come from these books. I believe a solid grasp on fundamentals is essential for success at any level, and lessons will include level appropriate scales and technique work along with solo repertoire and duets.
I work to customize my teaching to each individuals learning style, and aim to give each student the tools to achieve success in whatever their musical goals may be. Central to my teaching goal is the belief that learning an instrument should be fun and build confidence, rather than anxiety, and I strive to make the lesson experience a safe and comfortable space, where stress is low but focus is high, so maximum learning can take place. It is my sincere hope that through sharing my passion for music making, I am able to help foster a lifelong curiosity and love of music in my students.
