I am a recent college graduate with a B.A. in music (vocal emphasis) from Lee University who is passionate about providing wholistic music education in ear training, voice, theory, performance, acting, and historical understanding. I have performed with traveling choirs around the world with my college's women's choir, the Ladies of Lee, and I was a member of St. George's Episcopal church choir in their residence at Ely Cathedral in England in 2018. I have been in choirs and learned piano since first grade, and I now help lead worship at St. George's contemporary and classical services. I recently completed an internship at Full Circle Music where I helped provide background vocals and served as an editor and writer of company educational materials for songwriters.
I have tutored old and young alike in music and enjoy teaching as much as I do performing. I tutored all levels of music theory in college and have offered voice lessons to friends on a request basis, but I am excited to formally launch my voice studio on Musika Lessons! My goal is to holistically develop young musicians to prepare them for a lifetime of healthy, excellent. and joyful music-making. I will focus on vocal technique (tone, resonance, breath support, vowel production, musicality, placement, and consonants, to name a few.), ear training, theory, historical context of repertoire, best performance practices, and acting to help prepare you to sing any genre with confidence, freedom, and creativity.
I will start new students, especially young students, with folk songs, games and exercises to train the ear, sense of rhythm, and acting muscles, prepare them to be able to read and understand musical notation, and encouragement to perform in a solo capacity when possible. As students progress in skill and expertise, we will begin learning songs with notation, continue developing sight reading and aural skills, introduce more challenging repertoire and foreign languages, deepen technical vocabulary and understanding, and prepare for audition opportunities.
I want students to walk away from lessons inspired and excited, and never defeated. I expect a lot from my students and ask a lot of them, but this is because I believe that students are only truly happy when they can see their progress. When a student is encouraged to get out of their comfort zone, and when they experience their own musicality to its highest potential, I believe that a student will be motivated to continue learning and excelling. I also believe that students should be well-rounded musicians who can not only sing notes they have memorized, but who understand music and are able to interpret a page with emotion, thoughtfulness, and sensitivity. I want to students to encounter music as something alive and beautiful, not dead notes on a page. I come with a plan but adjust based on the progress, mastery, and needs of each student.
