Overview:
I love showing people how fun music can be, and learning an instrument is the best way to do that. I've been playing guitar since 2002, writing songs since 2005, and recording/releasing music since 2009. I'm now fortunate enough to do this for a living! My songs have been on multiple TV shows, tens of thousands of people stream my music every month, I produce music for other artists, and I also write blog posts geared toward helping my fellow musicians. My goal here is to show students the joy of music while helping them learn their favorite songs on guitar!
EXPERIENCE
I gave my first guitar lessons when I was in college, teaching a young teenage boy. From that point on, I realized how cool it was to see someone go from beginner to intermediate under my clock. It was inspiring. And I've taught people in a wide range of ages, from that young boy to a college student to a 30-something woman via online lessons. So no matter what age you are or how you want to take lessons, I can teach you. Really, what drives me as a teacher is seeing others find their passion for music!
METHODS USED
I use the song-by-song method: I have my students choose a number of songs they want to learn, and I teach them how to play those songs one by one, learning the basics of guitar along the way. For intermediate students, I would use the same method, but encourage them to choose more complex songs. This method teaches the student guitar playing techniques without bogging them down with confusing music theory and scales (although we can learn those things later after the student progresses). And if a student is learning a song they love, they're more likely to keep at it. Music if fun, and learning an instrument should be too.
LESSON STYLE
A student's progression is completely up to them. I teach them the techniques and give them the knowledge and then give them a goal to reach by our next lesson. I try to be as encouraging as possible while still pointing out things they could be doing better. Again, the main point of learning an instrument is to have fun with it. So I try to have fun during the teaching process. If my students dread coming to the lessons, they may just need a little encouragement, or they don't actually want to learn.
