I am a local freelance musician who has a passion for teaching students both young and old. I have been playing for over 10 years and have a firm grasp on how the instrument should be played and how to communicate to others how it should be played. I have a diverse record of performance experience, including playing with the Akron and Erie Symphony Orchestras and playing at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. I have competed in multiple local and national competitions and have attended music festivals from around the United States.
I have not been teaching lessons for long in my career, but since I grew up in Northeast Ohio and went to school at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, I know the region well. I participated in the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony and the Akron Youth Symphony, so I am familiar with opportunities that are in the area and know how to prepare students for these types of elite ensembles. I have performed in multiple professional ensembles and as a result specialize in orchestral and wind band studies and the technique someone would need to participate in them.
Every student is different, and for that reason I tailor each students materials to their needs. Some students are advanced enough to begin learning from Rochut's Melodious Etudes book, while some may need something easier than that, like Cimera's Phrasing Studies book. I focus hard on the fundamentals of the instrument and don't introduce material that is too hard for the student. I also want to make sure that the student is playing their school's band music correctly, and if they need help, I work on that with them.
Every student needs to be approached differently. I take every student at their pace knowing that students can be burned out if they progress too quickly or become bored if they aren’t challenged. Modern middle and high schoolers can be very busy and it is not productive to give them too much than they can handle. I see it as one of my primary responsibilities to keep the student engaged, focused, and motivated. I am very focused on the fundamentals of the instruments and how that connects with playing musically and effectively.
