Master Degree: University of Arkansas
I have been labeled a passionate, patient, and fun instructor. I focus on goal driven lessons entailing theory, ear training, repertoire, technique, and history. I studied ethnomusicology and Japanese music in graduate school, so my teaching style is inclusive and diverse. I have been performing in orchestra since the age of 15 and have performed in ensembles such as band, world music, Latin music, jazz, electronic music, and more. I compose electronic music with the implementation of live instruments, vocals, and effects.
I started teaching lessons in high school to other students. I've been teaching privately for nearly 20 years now. I have worked for public and private schools teaching music lessons and ensemble groups. I was a graduate teaching assistant during my masters degree and taught technique and etude lessons weekly to undergraduate flute students. I have taught at music studios in both Arkansas and Colorado. Currently I have been exclusively teaching online. I love setting goals in lessons whether it's for an upcoming recital, recording, audition, or personal goals. I also help in composition and songwriting during lessons.
For piano students I usually use Piano Adventures method books while supplementing with scales, pop and classical repertoire, theory, ear training, history and more. For ukulele and guitar we focus on strumming patterns, rhythm, chords, and repertoire anywhere from rock or pop to classical. Sometimes I will use a method book for guitar or ukulele students if they like that fit. I subscribe to Everand to access a library of music regularly for my students. I also arrange songs myself if the student is eager to learn a particular song.
I am extremely passionate about music and have been driven my whole life, so I show my passion in my teaching by my exuberant and fun teaching style. I like to focus on long term and short term projects to build confidence in a variety of ways. I expect regular practice if not daily, and I ask questions during lessons to stimulate critical thinking. I am very encouraging, but critique when necessary and isolate a problem to address it quickly to build confidence in the student. I am a patient, conscientious, fun and driven instructor.
