Master Degree: New England Conservatory
Performing at the piano seems to be as much a part of my life as any other aspect. All the way back to my earliest recollections of my youth no memory can be thought of without the piano being present. It was my mother who had discovered my talent for the piano when after practicing some Mozart and Clementi Sonatas and Sonatinas she heard her two-year-old son playing them. Thus I began piano lessons around the age of 5. And 2 years later I began publicly performing. At age 10, I began studying at Interlochen with my first teacher of renown. It was at this point that I began learning how to expand my capabilities at the piano. From that time until University I participated in master classes and enjoyed many performance opportunities. Preparing for University studies, my teacher in Pittsburgh recommended Jura Margulis. Based on this recommendation, my caring mother decided to move with me to Arkansas while finishing up my high school so that I could begin studies and enter the UofA upon graduation. So it was that I befriended the Margulis family, all of whom are musicians, and during this time was exposed to many different schools of piano for a period of no less than 7 years. I continued my education at America's first conservatory, New England Conservatory. The time I spent deep in this musically rich environment can be summed up in a word: thrilling! Having been instructed from every major pedagogical school of piano (Russian, German, Austrian, Italian, French and American) I have a unique lens through which I view the glorious instrument. Bringing this experience with me, I traveled to and spent the next decade of my life in Asia. Seeing how well Western classical music was adopted throughout, there was no shortage of exciting performance opportunities. I collaborated with Yamaha in Thailand having access to the new hybrid grand pianos after the company's purchase of Bosendorfer. I even got to be a part of an American composer's premiere work with the Guangzhou Symphony for the opening of a new concert hall in a public shopping mall in downtown Guangzhou, China. Although I had already begun teaching before heading to Asia, it was while abroad that I truly saw my skills as a teacher flourish. Students hungry for pianistic abilities in many regions of that continent flooded my studios. They yearned for confidence in performance and knowledge to control their playing while maintaining expression. It was an absolute joy to witness such desire for improvement and rapid advancement. Shaped by these experiences, I offer my methods in the style of Bruce Lee: based on your given circumstance at any moment, the correct discipline from any school of thought will be matched to your specific needs and goals. Let's make music!
My first experience teaching took place while I was still a bachelor student at university. I took on my first students with excitement and falling into teaching was the most comfortable happening. Knowing what was necessary to produce the desired results within myself, teaching became an expansion of self where I solved students' problems as though they were my own. It was as though I myself, was practicing through them until the issue was resolved. This is a style that has been cultivated and honed in on over the years producing an exact, almost metaphysical science.
Each student is unique and learning piano should be tailored for each individual. In our modern age with instant access to just about any material imaginable, we begin by discussing desired goals for you (or your child) and then choose the appropriate course of action. If starting fresh, then a firm foundation will be built. If continuing the journey, any gaps will be delicately filled. There is no end to the discovery of music through the piano, however, my primary goal as your instructor will be to help you become an independent musician able to solve any mystery with ease!
The type of teaching style I employ calls upon students to take responsibility for their growth as pianists. A holistic approach provides a complete knowledge of music theory without the need for external courses on the matter. As lessons continue, students will suddenly find themselves encompassing a great wealth of knowledge. This is useful for the pursuant of a professional career as well as a simple hobby. The hobbyist will be able to enjoy all music on a much deeper level while the one who chooses to make a living will be perfectly equipped.
