Performed with Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Wind Symphony 2004-2008. (2008-2016) I have been teaching professionally for 6 years, and currently teach from my home studio in Eugene, OR, as well as mobile and Skype lessons. Drummer for Malanga, Lofty, Breakers Yard, Hypersapien, and Descarga 54.
I'm a passionate music educator, drummer, and composer with many years of teaching and performing experience. My philosophy is that playing music should be fun, easy, and exciting! Drumming allows us to creatively express our emotions through music, and has made a profound impact on my life in many unexpected ways. Taking private drum lessons will give you valuable skills which will continue to stay with you throughout your life. There is nothing that I enjoy more than helping others to find their inner rhythm!
Through my academic study of music theory, history, and performance, I have been able to play with and learn from many accomplished musicians. In 2008 I graduated from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, and since then have written for, recorded with, and played in many different bands throughout the country. From Laurel Lee and the Escapees, an alternative country band in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL, to latin rock and salsa groups in Eugene, OR, my appreciation and desire to understand rhythms from different musical traditions is always growing. Whatever styles you're interested in learning, I'd love to help you become the best drummer you can be!
For beginning students, I begin by focusing on call and response playing and improvisation. For adult and intermediate students, I start to introduce more advanced music theory concepts, using a combination of sight reading, reciting rhythms verbally, and memorization. The curriculum I use is compiled from my favorite drumming resources like Hal Leonard and Joel Rothman, as well as my personal collection of inspirational percussionists, authors, and composers such as Billy Martin and Bob Moses.
As a drummer, music educator, and composer, my greatest desire is to help others express themselves creatively through music. It's important to recognize that we all come from different backgrounds and levels of experience. It is my goal to show my students that music is a natural expression that is accessible to all. Playing music improves memory, improves motor skills, increases mental focus, builds confidence, and strengthens communities, and also creates a profound sense of purpose and joy. By taking lessons with me, you will find that learning to play the drums is an incredibly fun, powerful, and uplifting feeling!
