Bachelor Degree: Northwestern State University
Master Degree: Louisiana State University
1st prize winner of the Louisiana bass festival young artist solo competition
I earned my bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State University in music performance, and my master’s degree in music performance from Louisiana State University. My education has culminated in an understanding of many musical styles from classical music and jazz in the double bass to funk, blues, and metal on the electric bass. All forms of musical expression are valid and should be explored! My teaching focuses on the foundations of music making, not simply learning songs on the bass. This will give students the necessary knowledge to explore any style of music that they choose.
Hi! I am a performer and instructor in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. As a performer I have worked in a variety of settings, including symphony orchestras, jazz bands, and popular music ensembles. As an instructor I have worked with students of varying age (9-40+) in a variety of settings. My teaching work has culminated in my several year tenure as bass teaching artist with Kid’s Orchestra, an after-school music program in the Baton Rouge area. I would love to work with anyone who has a passion for music and wishes to expand their knowledge and understanding of this most amazing art form.
For beginning students I focus on easily accessible music theory to tackle several key musical ideas at once; notes on the instrument, key signatures and scales, and the ability to read musical pitches and rhythms in music notation. Both electric and double bass lessons will begin this way. After this, the two diverge. If classical bass is your focus then skill with the bow and orchestral techniques will be explored. If you are an electric bassist we will explore a variety of genres and learn how the bass functions in each of these settings.
My teaching style is catered to the student. We will go at a pass that fits with the students needs. The first lesson is critical in understanding the capabilities of the student and the pace at which they work. The musical interests of the student are of major import as well. Learning styles that the student likes and enjoys will create a much more exciting and interesting learning experience for all parties involved. That being said, basic music theory is paramount to understanding how any music genre functions.
