MM, Duquesne University, Vocal Performance BM, Seton Hill University, Music Education - Voice
Overview:
I am a passionate voice and beginning piano teacher with over ten years of experience teaching. For beginner piano students I use the Piano Adventures curriculum. With voice students I use an integrated technique involving Alexander Technique, Yoga, and the Swedish-Italian School of singing. I also believe in maintaining a positive and challenging learning environment for my students. I hold a Bachelor of Music Education from Seton Hill University and a Master of Music from Duquesne University.
EXPERIENCE
* 10 years of private lesson teaching experience * 4 years of school teaching experience * Vocal director for multiple musicals * 8 years of church music experience * 1 year of continuing-education college teaching experience * 7 years of choral directing experience * Trained in Orff-Schulwerk Level 1 *Bachelor of Music Education from Seton Hill University *Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Duquesne University I have also sung operatic roles in Pittsburgh, Miami, and Vancouver. I have performed concerts in Rome and Florence, Italy.
METHODS USED
Beginning Piano Students: I use three books in the Piano Adventures series: (Performance, Lesson, and Theory). I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. Voice Students: I interview all voice students first to see what their goals are in voice study. I then begin vocal study with the study of posture using Alexander Technique ideas, and a study of breathing and support techniques. I then scaffold in more vocal techniques. All students will learn classical and pop music together unless their personal goals reflect otherwise.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is both rigorous and positive. I believe that the best way to learn any skill is through hard work and persistence in a judgement-free, positive psychological environment. I work in a routine every lesson so that students understand the next step in the process. I make accommodations for each student depending on their personal goals, needs, and learning styles. No two students are the same, so no two lessons should be the same. In addition, if the student is a child and I am working with a parent, I keep the parent as informed and involved as possible.

Candice is brilliant. She is firm and thorough and makes sure my daughter is getting the right foundation training to play the piano.
