I am a veteran of the teaching profession. I graduated from S.C.S.U. in 1986 and I have been instructing students in many capacities since that time. Some attributes I bring to my profession are a calm, understanding demeanor and a passion for helping my students achieve their individual goals. My motivation for remaining in this profession for this length of time is the benefit I pass to my students. Helping them learn a new concept or master a skill they thought unattainable is what sustains my interest in and love of teaching.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for more than 25 years and I have instructed students of many different ages and ability levels. My experience with music is now at 30+ years. I have worked as a private music tutor and have played with many local bands/musicians during that time. I've also done studio work with original acts, but I prefer performing live. When talking with young players or those who wish to become musicians my advice to them is to be patient, don't get discouraged and practice as much as possible!
METHODS USED
I initially have a student work on a series of simple fingering exercises. This gets the student familiar with the feel of the instrument and helps to reinforce how the left and right hands work together when performing. Another benefit is that it helps the student to build speed/dexterity when playing. When these exercises/techniques have been mastered I then introduce the student to concepts such as notes, scales, intervals, basic chord structure, etc. Along with introducing these concepts I stress studying/learning the fingerboard as it relates to such concepts.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching music requires a great deal of patience and insight. The instructor should be able to identify his/her students "comfort level" when creating/implementing an instruction program for a student. If a student feels as if he is being pushed along at a pace not suited for his learning style the student may not gain maximum benefit from the instruction. The student may also begin to lose interest in continuing with instructions. Music should be a fun and exciting endeavor, with the right mentor it will be for the student!
