Overview:
Born in Udine (Italy) on May 24th 1994, I grew up in a musical environment and started taking music lessons at the age of 3, under the instruction of Giorgio Cozzutti. In 2003, keeping on taking theory and solfeggi rudiments, I started playing piano under Cozzutti’s mentorship, but ended up quitting 2 years later. After a while, almost randomly, in a music store, I discovered electric bass, falling in love with it immediately. My first bass teacher is Luciano Marangone. In 2009, I started playing classical and jazz upright bass joining the Conservatory in Udine with Franco Feruglio and Simone Serafini. Two years later I joined for the first time a real jazz band, ending up performing regularly. Meanwhile, my influences have always been open to any style, and I have always tried to experience as many moods as possible taking part in funk/hip-hop, blues, pop, latin, progressive rock/metal, electronic or orchestral projects, beside jazz. In 2012, I had the chance to attended the yearly Summer Berklee Program, which takes place in Perugia (Italy) during the Umbria Jazz festival and I won a scholarship for the yearly Berklee Summer Camp. A year later I attended the Five-Week program at Berklee, Boston and got another scholarship that allowed me to enroll at Berklee College of Music in 2014 as an undergraduate student. In addition I have also been attending weekly classes held by Glauco Venier in Udine Conservatory and joined the jazz collective formed by the students of the jazz department. In my third semester at Berklee I auditioned for a cruise ship gig with Guille & The B. Band, a latin jazz quintet. We got hired by MSC Cruises Company and sent on board of the ship "MSC Divina" where I have been performing on board everyday for almost 5 months (Jan-May 2016), playing both upright bass and electric and doing some background vocals before coming back to Boston to pursue my studies. Currently based in Brooklyn, I graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2018 (performance major) under the guide of Fernando Huergo, James Genus, Whit Browne, Susan Hagen, Lincoln Goines and Michael Pope I also had the chance to attend clinics and individual classes with players such Gary Willis, Eddie Gomez, John Clayton, John Patitucci, Victor Wooten, Jeff Berlin, Alain Caron, Marco Panascia.
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching started back in high school, when I gave my first private lesson to a friend on bass guitar. That moment has been so important to me because I realized teaching is not only about giving, but it's a mutual exchange in which both parties get a chance of growth. From then on, I kept teaching a few students privately and I later volunteered as an ensemble\bass teacher for a yearly Summer Camp happening in my hometown. That really helped me, providing me a more complete perspective of teaching, and about how to balance theory with the actual fun of playing.
METHODS USED
I usually tend to focus on technique and posture when I'm dealing with a beginner. I'll get to introduce them the instrument itself and make them familiarize with the fretboard (with a special focus on bow and shifts when it comes to upright bass). Rudiments of ear training and harmony will follow as the students progress with their favorite tunes, etudes or a general introduction to styles (depending on the student's temper and instrument). With more advanced students the method is more flexible of course, and I usually tend to focus on spotting their level and weak areas. Then it's a personalized, "made-to-measure" path that could involve the study of classical repertoire, jazz standards or modern songs.
LESSON STYLE
I always try to adapt to every single student's personality and transmit the passion I feel through my instruments. I believe it is important for a teacher to invest time on their students even when they're not in class, so the program flows better and immediate improvement is more likely to occur. A real teacher doesn't keep secrets. The actual goal for me is for my students to be prepared to play out there in the real world. I want them to realize that the time one spends behind the instrument pays off, if it's done the right way.
