Overview:
My love for music started at the age of 7 when my mom enrolled me in a piano lesson. I continuously played the piano and there was a point that I also studied the organ to be able to play as an organist in our church. When I was in high school, my interest shifted towards guitar because of the surge of battle of the bands and I luckily became part of our high school band as a lead guitarist. My brother was our drummer, that's why I was able to develop some skills in drums as well. I also enrolled in violin lesson for a brief period of time out of curiosity. During college days, while juggling my time as a student, basketball varsity player, and as a pianist/organist in our church, I was suddenly intrigued on how to play saxophone, hence, I gave it a try and had my lesson in the same music school where I did my violin lesson. I never had a degree in music nor I mastered a musical instrument. It was just my hobby because in my country, music would only offer limited jobs or may not be even considered as a career by many. Until now, I really enjoy playing those different musical instruments but I have decided to focus on piano and saxophone (tenor) because they have been like my first love and true love, respectively.
EXPERIENCE
To be honest, I never had a formal teaching experience as a music teacher since it is more like a hobby to me. I pursued a different career but music has always been part of my life and my burning passion for it never ceased. When I was a kid, I performed couple of piano recitals, and after several years, I eventually made my mom proud by playing the piano/organ in our church. I actually dreamed of becoming a popular guitarist during high school because I was so into the band but that passion was just short-lived. I have showcased my violin talent during high school pageant. As far as I can remember, one of my informal students was my brother. I taught him every song that he would want to play in piano or guitar and shared some basic knowledge on how to play and remember the chords easily.
METHODS USED
First of all, I would ask the student if music would be his/her career or just a hobby. If it is to be his/her career, my approach would be more theoretical. But if it would be just a hobby like mine, I would encourage the student to learn by ear supplemented with a little theory to be able to learn a musical piece or song in the shortest time possible. I would teach them right away the basic chords and try to inspire them by showing how satisfying it is to play music by ear. Learning music needs to be fun, and inevitably, I understand that some have short attention span and easily get bored when prompted to do something that they don't really feel doing especially the children. Hence, it would really depend on the student's preference.
LESSON STYLE
My goal for every student especially the beginners is to make them play like a pro as soon as possible with emphasis on playing music by ear. My way of teaching is kind of unconventional because based on my experience, it took me a long time before I was able to play any song that I like since reading notes would require unwavering attention and huge effort depending on student’s skills to be able to play it perfectly. When you learn to play music by ear, you could play any song that you hear, trust me. I know that it won’t be easy for some, but there are some ways to improve your ear through the use of other instruments. One perfect example is violin which really honed my ears to music.
