Overview:

I am an enthusiastic and passionate private flute instructor who loves working with students of all ages. I love to see students grow into better musicians with each lesson we have. In May of 2016, I graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree. I had an incredible opportunity to perform with the Texas State University Wind Symphony at the Collegiate Band Directors National Association conference in 2014. I also performed with them at the annual TMEA convention as the flute soloist.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 3 years. Lessons and master class performances throughout the nation with such artists as Ian Clarke, Jim Walker, Leone Buyse and more have given me a range of professional viewpoints and inspired my teaching and performance. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages!

METHODS USED

For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals.

For piano beginning students, I usually start with the Alfred Book series. This is a really fun way for the piano students to grasp the fundamentals and learn how to independently move each finger at different times. As the student progresses, I try to find out what kind of style they enjoy playing and advise which books to purchase next. My goal as an educator is to develop a unique style and approach molded by each student in order to the gain the most success. Lessons are not one-size-fits-all and this is reflected in my teaching style.

LESSON STYLE

For me, nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students grow and develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. When getting to know a student, I try to find out what inspires them and what their hobbies are. By doing this, I can adjust my lesson plans to their wants and needs.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
