I am a passionate multi-instrumentalist who believes in empowering students to reach their full potential. Last year, I received my Bachelor of Science from SUNY New Paltz with a degree in contemporary music studies/ pre-music therapy. I am currently in the SUNY New Paltz Masters Music Therapy Program and have worked with a variety of populations, including adults in rehabilitation facilities, older adults with dementia, and children of all ages.
I am a classically trained flute player and have had the privilege of playing in ensembles across Long Island and here within the SUNY New Paltz community. I spent years working to master techniques of classical flute playing. However, I also have experience playing classical flute in a different genre/atmosphere as seen in the YouTube link below! I began playing piano at a young age and have been fortunate enough to continue learning in both the SUNY New Paltz Music Department, and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick in Ireland. At this point in my musical journey, I focus a great deal on guitar (a necessity for music therapy), so I am additionally proficient in this area!
I've taught several students over the years and have had truly rewarding experiences. I have taken some time off from teaching private lessons to focus on my academic and clinical training in the field of music therapy. My main goal in teaching is to make my students feel engaged in their practice and motivated to pursue the challenge of learning an instrument. I want to provide a safe space for students of all ages to learn and grow with their instrument in a way that feels genuinely exciting and motivating! Learning and practicing an instrument is largely unsuccessful if it is done out of obligation; I want my students to feel empowered to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. Music lessons can certainly be stressful, but I want to foster a positive and fun learning environment for all of my students.
Throughout my years of personal training, I have accumulated a collection of useful song books, workbooks, flute and piano repertoire, theory books, etc. I have resources for all levels of playing and learning (appropriate for students of all ages!) I like to begin my lessons with a brief discussion with my students regarding how they envision their training to be, goals they may have in mind, and what they ultimately want to get out of lessons. From there I can shape the trajectory of our lessons to fit the experience they would like to have. I am happy to work with students on classical/traditional repertoire and/or preferred music of different genres.
Nothing is more important to me than seeing my students enjoy the time they dedicate to taking lessons and learning an instrument. All too often students take lessons out of obligation and ultimately dread their lesson time every week! The last thing I would ever want my students to feel is pressured. I want my students to feel excited about what they are pursuing, and hopefully I can add to that excitement by fostering a positive atmosphere during lessons. I like to be clear when giving instructions on what specifically to practice between lessons. The more clarity in learning, the more potential for growth!
