BS, Brigham Young University, Elementary Education
I have taught piano for many years. I love children and adults and want to share my love of music. I have a Bachelor of Science from BYU in Elementary Education. I have played piano for many years beginning at the age of 8. I played for my Church beginning at the age of 13. I have five children who I have taught the piano. I have been successful at bringing them to love music and not only play well, but also compose music. I started teaching at the age of 18 and enjoy teaching in my home each week.
My teaching experience began at the age of 18. I taught many of the neighborhood kids. I would go to their homes and teach all of the brothers and sisters. Later, about 10 years ago I resumed piano teaching, but this time in my home. I have taught many of the kids, teenagers and adults that have come to me asking for lessons. I have played in Church throughout the years as an accompanist and solo musician. I have competitions and recitals to help motivate my students and to make it fun. I believe it should be fun.
I primarily use the Alfred, Thompson, Hannon and Dozen a Day methods. I also teach the hymns for religious students, beginning with very simplified hymns going up to the regular hymns. I also like doing duets with my students. I often let them choose the song they would like to perform for the recital. I like the Alfred series because it comes with some good lesson, recital, duet and fun song books. I like the Thompson books because they start out with finger numbers, which I believe are helpful.
I like to make it fun. I teach them the songs and play I for them myself so they can see it played and hear it. Sometimes we watch utube videos of the song being played. I teach the fingering first and the notes along with it. I have contests and games and learning apps. I have recitals to encourage them to practice and prepare. These also give them experience performing in front of a group. I have prizes for practicing each week. I like to find the kind of songs the student likes to play. This helps them enjoy it
