ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BM, Bob Jones University, Church Music, Piano Proficiency, cum laude

Overview:
In 2004 I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in church music. Playing for and working with music in churches has been one of the highlights of the past 14 years. I pubished a CD of hymns entitled Eternal Days, where I arranged hymns for solo piano and piano and flute in 2017. Now, I continue to arrange hymns for my church and students, reflecting their current needs and levels. I work through method books, supplementing with other fun books to increase confidence in my students' current level. Recognising the importance of musical performance, I encourage my students to perform in recitals, in church, and in front of friends and family as much as possible.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons while I was in high school, teaching a variety of students from the ages of 3 to 60 both flute and piano. During the years right after my university graduation I taught 1 or 2 students in my home, as well as teaching music to my own children from the beginner to the intermediate level. Teaching my own children has given me insight into not only the role of teaching children, but also the important role of the parent in supporting practice. Since early 2017, I have been growing my online and local studio, including a variety of small children, adults, and a special needs student. Half of my students are online (in Europe), which I enjoy as the time difference allows me to teach early in the morning. My other students are local. I am currently looking for online students, but will be opening up for local students soon!
METHODS USED
I currently start teaching piano from the Faber method books, as they encourage the students move around the piano using different fingerings. We play flash card games, and sometimes use music apps to help learn the notes on the staff, while playing clapping ryhythm games most lessons. I also teach from the alfred method books as well as the alfred adult series. Congregational hymnplaying is taught using the students' own church hymnal, encouraging the student to start playing in church through preludes, eventually leading into playing for the congregation as ready. I also have taught grades 1 and 2 ABRSM piano exams in the United Kingdom, in which my students have a 100% pass rate, reaching the highest award of distinction in 3 out of 4 exams. I recently started using the Blocki method books to teach beginning flute. I have had success in using the Blocki pneumo pro to teach the diection of air flow for both the low and high register. I am also currently teaching th grade 5 ABRSM exam, which includes scales, arpeggios, sight reading, prepared pieces from 3 periods, sight singing, and aural skills.
LESSON STYLE
What a joy to see a student's face light up when they understand a concept, or the pride they display when they play their piece well! I enjoy using method books to provide structure, but it's important to keep the attention of younger students by inserting games and changing the pace. If my student is struggling with a piece, we often take a break and pull out a fun theory page, play a rhythm game, or play a flash card challenge before returning to the piece. In addition to method books, it's important to have something extra that is fun, such as a hymn to play for church, or a movie theme book, or duet, etc. This reinforces what the child is learning, but also makes practice fun! So we incorporate the necessary in with what the student finds fun, and build from there. After all, a happy, smiling student will learn much faster, don't you think?

Carrie W. is a delightful, energetic, engaging teacher. Our 11 year old daughter looked forward to her lessons each week. Even when she was corrected about hand position, fingering, or the counting of notes, Carrie would say what needed to be changed, then be off again to something positive and encouraging. Every lesson was a positive experience. Her personality is affable and warm, and I enjoyed the lessons as much as my daughter did.

I am one of the 60 year old students that Carrie mentioned above. My wife and I were her students while she was in college and working to pay her bills. We used a book for adults and Carrie was very caring and patient. Some of my lessons were supervised practice as Carrie called it.

I have taken flute and piano lessons from Carrie for about 10 months. I have had the special privilege of having lessons in person and online. Carrie is very encouraging every step of the way. Her arrangements have been particularly helpful with the music I play in church.

Mrs. Carrie W. is a fantastic teacher! She makes concepts simple and understandable and encourages you all along the way. In the past 3 years or so she has equipped me with the ability to plays hymns for congregational singing AND - more recently - the ability to write my own hymn arrangements!

Carrie is teaching my daughter, 7, piano and myself, 31, guitar. We live far from her but she has made music lessons easy for our family by doing them over Skype. She is a very encouraging teacher and pays attention to detail. She moves along at a pace that is best for the student and takes time to work with them on important issues before moving onto new concepts. She makes it fun and extremely practical by finding music that will be used by the student in "real" life. I would highly recommend Carrie as a music teacher. She knows how to work with children to keep them interested and involved while also having fun. And, personally, in my music lessons, I've been so pleased with how much I've learned (with little music knowledge) in such a short time.

Carrie has been teaching my 13 year old daughter music lessons throughout this summer and fall. Carrie is very knowledgable, is patient with my daughter, and has put in extra time to find songs that my daughter knows and enjoys playing for practice. Carrie is always cheerful and encouraging in their lesson time. My daughter has made so much progress, and I am very happy with Carrie as a teacher. I highly recommend her. Thanks, Carrie!
