I am a very dedicated instructor eager to share my knowledge and love of music with potential students! I attended a performing arts conservatory high school for 3 years of my high school education. I then went on to attend Belmont University in their award winning B.F.A. Musical Theatre program. I had a focus on Classical Voice and Musical Theatre. After leaving Belmont in 2017, I returned to the world of professional theatre. I have been very blessed to have performed along side brilliant performers at some of the top Equity and Non-Equity houses across the nation!
I began teaching back in 2013. I assisted in music direction for numerous musicals as well as teaching private voice. I have continued teaching private voice, in both my home and the student's home as well as online, since then after finding such a joy in individual teaching! I really try to emphasize the fun in music. I feel it is important for the student to enjoy what they are learning. The more they love it - the more they want to practice. I truly believe practice is key to any success. The more a student masters their craft, the more they find deeper passion for it. I love watching a student practice something and then finally master it and have that "Aha!" moment! It brings so much joy to me as an instructor to help a student achieve the goals they want to reach. Along with teaching voice and choral direction, I have taught dance, acting, masterclasses on specific topics and have choreographed and assistant directed for musicals. I am always welcoming new students of all ages and experience levels to come have some music fun!
I typically do a quick first lesson assessment to determine how advanced the student is and go from there. For beginning students, I usually start with recognizing note patterns. I have them listen to their favorite songs and mimic the melody back to me. This is the beginning of their basic ear training. It teaches them to be able to recognize specific melody patterns and allows them to learn songs by ear quicker in the future. I then move on to basic note recognition on paper. This allows them to be able to visually identify when notes are moving up and down and so on. Once they become more comfortable with this method, I move onto memorizing and learning new repertoire. For more advanced students, I really try to hone in on these things while also focusing deeper on their technique. I try to really stay within the student's interests no matter what level, while also giving them things outside of their box to challenge them and help them grow.
I want nothing but success for my students. Because of this, I make sure he or she is given goals that are going to be realistic for them to hit. It is important that each student moves at their own pace. I want each student to truly desire to learn more. Fun is key in learning a topic such as music. I try to have an open line of communication for what my students want to learn and what their specific and personal goals are. Teaching is personal. So, I try to make sure each individual student has what they need and tailor my lessons to them.
