Overview:
I’m an enthusiastic piano instructor very much used to dealing with kids. Having my own new son, I’m looking to settle into piano teaching and finish a degree in Music Performance. My passion is to share the beauty of music with each student I undertake and to motivate them to be their best self and project it through their practice and songs. Though music performance is a favorite past time of mine, teaching is where I really feel I’m called to. Coming from a family of 7 and having taught two of them piano I can say I have a good handle on the inner workings of children and the magic of getting them to practice. I believe music is for everyone and that everyone can find joy in it.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience actually began in high school when family friends noticed my skill and asked me to teach their kids. I then later accomplished many things while in Houston, Texas (where I previously lived) including live concert performances with the William Byrd Institute, instruction under renowned professors of music, and starting my own private home based lessons. I also spent a few months teaching at a popular music academy in San Antonio, Texas where performances, group lessons and recitals were all encouraged. I’m proud to say I had none of my 30 students terminate their instruction with me during my time there and I befriended many amiable parents.
METHODS USED
I typically start each student off on a series of lesson books to help structure their learning in an academic way. However, I highly encourage bringing in classical pieces and students picking pieces of their own and bringing them to me to go over and learn. I’ve found that this keeps the students highly motivated and passionate about their lessons and practice. For beginners, the books are highly recommended, but for more advanced students who have finished the books, we begin classical technique exercises meant to help with the increasing level of difficulty of their songs. Lessons are always different each day and kept engaging and fun!
LESSON STYLE
All teaching methods are different which is why I prefer to stay diverse and open to the preferences of the student. Being familiar with nearly every genre of music, I’m capable of teaching any style the student is interested in from movie scores, to broadway show tunes, to gospel, and modern, etc. Of course my favorite style and the one I recommend is the classical curriculum which I usually try to implement with each student as it has shown the best results in the past with students of all ages. In my experience, I’ve helped each student eventually find their passion and what they are best at in music and I encourage that they never let it go.
