Overview:
I’m a friendly and kind teacher, and I love sharing my love of Music with students both young and old. I studied at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before going to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester at 18. As a student I began working as a freelance bassoonist, around the UK. I spent a good deal of time playing in the orchestra for choirs and amateur operatic societies. One of my best experiences as a musician was in the orchestra of the European opera centre where I spent several months on a European Tour. A year after I graduated music college, I had the opportunity to gain a teaching certificate specialising in music education for the 3-11 age range. I also spent some time working with children with special educational needs particularly those with autism.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching while at music college, and soon found that I enjoyed imparting my love of music to others more than I enjoyed performing myself! I have been teaching private lessons at home and in students’ homes for 10 years. I taught classroom music in school in the UK for 5 years before my move to the USA. I like to allow my teaching style and repertoire to be somewhat directed by the student, while making sure that the music they are playing is a suitable difficulty and teaching them a rounded technique. This usually leads to a mixture of classical, contemporary and jazz or musical theatre. I believe that a student needs to be enjoying their lessons and their practice and if they do then they will make the most progress. I make my lessons fun and encourage students to perform whenever they get the opportunity. Performing is a great motivator as is playing in a band or orchestra. Playing music brings something special to every students life and I’m always looking to help share the music with new students both young and old!
METHODS USED
I use a mixture of my own custom lesson plans as well as working from a book if the student is a beginner. I use different books for different instruments but I don’t like to rely on them completely as all students learn at different rates and have different strengths and weaknesses. So sometimes I will source more music or activities from elsewhere or miss pieces or sections out. Once a beginner has grasped the very basics I quickly find them some repertoire they want to work on so they can play a ‘real piece of music’. I find that students love that first realisation that they really can play their instrument. For more advanced students or adults we work on repertoire they like and that will push them forward. What is most important is to keep lessons and practice fun and engaging, whether by playing music the student likes or by achieving a goal such as a recital or competition.
LESSON STYLE
Watching a student find the joy in playing music, makes my job immensely rewarding. I therefore am a positive teacher who tries to celebrate the best about every performance - including sight reading and scales! It’s also important to set realistic goals for every lesson and achievable practice goals between lessons. Since every student learns at a different pace these are understandably individual goals. Some students are inspired by achieving a goal and some are inspired by playing particularly music, so I try to tailor my lessons and goals to them.

Catherine has been very patient in teaching my son. She gave him very useful tips on managing his clarinet which makes it easier for him to handle it. My son enjoys Catherine's classes.

Our 6 year old son is enjoying his lessons with Catherine very much. She comes to our home, is always on time, and is very pleasant and patient with our son. He’s just starting out and has been inspired and practicing on his own. We are very pleased so far.

Two years ago, after 35 years of not playing, I decided to begin taking piano lessons again. Luckily, I found Catherine. Catherine is patient and kind, an excellent teacher for any age student. She always has a wonderful attitude, and we focus on the type of music I enjoy playing. Piano is again a joy for me. I look forward to my lessons each week, even if I haven't practiced as much as I should! I look forward to my continued growth as a musician and appreciate Catherine for always making it fun

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
