I love to sing and make music! I have sung with the Houston Symphony Chorus, Dallas Symphony Chorus, Mesquite Community Chorus, ASU Graduate and Doctoral chorales, and many worship teams, I have been in many musicals and was the lead in "Pirates of Penzance" and "The Consul". I was also in "Annie Get Your Gun", "South Pacific", and "Fiddler on the Roof". I was a soloist, singer, guitarist, and dancer in the show "TEXAS!" in the Palo Duro Canyon. I am also a songwriter and have written, recorded, and performed my original music for a variety of audiences. I love to teach and help students gain confidence in singing or playing the piano, guitar, or ukulele.
I have been teaching since college and have taught elementary through high school/college music in public and private schools over 20 years. I have also worked with adults who want to review or renew their music skills or learn how to play or sing for the first time! I now teach private lessons in my home studio or in students' homes. I encourage students to find a daily consistent time they can practice, even if for 20-30 minutes. I enjoy teaching music so much and I want my students to enjoy their lessons and have fun while learning! We play or sing duets together, which is fun and also helps students' gain confidence in their skills. I use a wide variety of method books and music styles while engaging with students in their music lessons. I learn so much from my students! Let's learn more about music together! We have recitals and some informal music sharing experiences as well.
I currently use Piano Adventures Lesson and Theory books for beginner students. I have also used the Alfred series and really like the Finger Power series, too. Fundamentals of music theory is extremely important for new students of any age. I ask students to use the Music Tutor App to help them learn note names for the treble and bass clefs, and they learn by playing a fun game. We sometimes have competitions with siblings to see who can get the highest score! For more advanced players and singers, I want to encourage practice and therefore, help the students find songs/repertoire that they are very interested in playing/performing. We make a goal to play a certain piece for a specific recital date and they are more motivated to practice! I have a Star Student Award each week for my studio for students are really doing a fantastic job with practice and making progress. The selected student receives an award and Star Student bracelet. Even my adult students are excited when they are the Start Student, too!
I try to get to know each student a little in the introduction/first lesson. I ask about their music goals and where they would like to be in a few months to a year. We talk about their favorite styles of music and artists. I am so excited to see my students progress and learn a new chord, play a new song well, sing a more challenging song, increase their vocal range, and become excited about their new musical skills! My favorite thing is seeing students gain self confidence in their abilities to learn, perform, and share music with others!
