I am an eager college student at Pensacola, Florida that us currently working on becoming a band director. Even though I don't have a degree in music, I still have the capability to be a great percussion teacher. In May 2021, I graduated from Avon Park High School. I am currently at the University of West Florida as a music education student. I have performed in choir, band, and orchestra programs since I was 10 years old. My hope is to receive my Bachelors Degree in Music Education and teach at a high school band program.
My teaching experience goes back into my senior year in high school. I was a student intern for my school at Avon Elementary School. At first, I took notes and watched the teacher engage the kids in the lesson. But as time progressed on, I began to teach the kids about the different types of notes and percussion. When it came to teaching percussion, I taught them how to play rhythms with sticks. In addition to being an assistant teacher, I helped set up the music room for each group of students.
For my methods of teaching, I work on rudiments and work on basics for percussion. Even if the student has played percussion for years, I still want them to understand the fundementals for the instrument. As soon as the student is finished with rudiments, I want them to look at the different etudes in a percussion book that I will work off of for each meeting. As far as materials go, I am hoping that the student will have drumsticks and a practice pad. I'm hoping that the student will be eager to learn!
The way I approach teaching percussion is starting with an introduction and working through along the way. I usually teach in a way that allows the student to be able to perform freely. At first, I work with them and show them how to play a certain rhythm and then I allow them to play it on their own. I want to make sure that they are actively learning how to play a certain instrument instead of relying on a book. By allowing them to work on the music on their own, it will provide independence for the student.
