Overview:
I am an energetic and patient (promise) teacher. I studied Piano at Music Conservatory of Porto (Portugal). I decided to become a composer and moved on to graduate in Music Composition in Lisbon, and to having my music performed in Europe and the United States, by world class orchestras (like Gulbenkian Orchestra and Orchestrutopica), and world class conductors (like Beat Furrer and Christopher Bochmann), but to this day I never stopped studying piano, playing piano, composing for piano and yes, of course, teaching piano. In addition to Music Conservatory of Porto and Escola Superior de Música de Lisbon, I also studied Composition with Dutch composer Klaas de Vries in Hoogeschool voor Muziek en Dans, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Finally, I attended masterclasses with composers Jorge Peixinho, Emmanuel Nunes, Helmut Lachenmann and Philippe Hurel, amongst others.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano in 1995, in several private Music Schools, in Porto and Lisbon. Apart from the instrument, I also taught Music Theory, and Music Composition. I taught students aged 6 all the way up to sixty-seven (my oldest so far, but records are meant to be broken). My students have performed in recitals organized by the schools. My goal is to help you achieve a good musical performance by focusing on all aspects of playing the piano, from body posture, to technique and expression. I will make the most of my skills as a composer and lead you towards an understanding of the music you'll play.
METHODS USED
I teach classical music exclusively. My strategy for utterly inexperienced students is to remove from the equation the difficulty of reading a music score, and just allow the hands to "learn" the keyboard by having the student repeating short musical sentences (either preexisting or improvised by me on the spot). Once familiarity with the keyboard has been achieved, or if the student already reads music, we move on to his or her first book, and I tend to favor Nancy and Randall Faber's Piano Adventures. Then, as the student's ability grows and confidence builds, we move on to Carl Czerny's short and easy Études and easy pieces by J. S. Bach and other composers.
LESSON STYLE
My favorite part of teaching is witnessing the student's joy as he or she plays his or her first piece from beginning to end with full confidence. In order to achieve this I provide as much encouragement as possible in well performed passages, and zero-in on trickier passages. I require that my students practice as regularly as possible and most of their assigned homework consists in suggesting strategies or exercises to master those trickier passages as soon as possible and move on to even trickier ones.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
