BA Rutgers College Music Composition MS Univeristy of Montclair
Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love for music. I teach all levels and ages. I believe music is a gift that once learned can be a lifelong joy. I work closely with my students to allow them to achieve their musical goals and express their creativity through music and song. I have studied and composed music my entire live. When I am not out playing music or teaching I am generally in my studio writing and recording music or practicing.
EXPERIENCE
I began studying music at age 10. By twelve years old I began serious study and practice on the piano. By 15 I was playing weekly church services on both organ and piano. I attended both Rutgers College and Berklee School of Music in Boston, where I continued my studies in piano, jazz composition and arranging, voice and performance. After graduation I began a career as a professional pianist, choir director, and teacher. I have worked countless venue for the past 30 years. I have performed on piano in both the US, Mexico, parts or Europe and the Caribbean.
METHODS USED
I work with a variety of learning methods including Hal Leonard, John Thompson, Bastien, Alfred, Hanon, Czerny and Faber. I select methodology and solo repertoire to best improve my students technique while at the same time keeping their interest and enthusiasm. I also encourage music compostition, arranging and improvisation to those students who express an interest and desire to learn who to write and compose music. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of piano I try to engage with my students to learn how to make music on the piano or voice. In voice not only to you have to produce a tone and articulate the words and melody correctly but you must also find ways to express emotion. The same holds true for piano. Once we can play all the correct notes then the process begins in making the performance sound expressive and emotional.
LESSON STYLE
I base my teaching style on the individual student and how they learn. Some students learn more by rote, others learn more by oral and others learn more by understanding theory. I always incorporate proper technique so that the student developes as quickly as possible. For those students who like working from a more traditional sense I work primarily with the John Thompsen and Bastien Piano Methods. Other students, especially students that start at an older age I work immediately by having them play familiar songs and melodies and as their technique improves providing them with more difficult music to play.
