I have been a student of music for 50 years and continue to love the older styles as well as all the new directions while music evolves. I believe music can transform a person and those transformed will touch many other lives. Being a certified speech/drama/debate instructor as well as a musician I am convinced that music is a language and needs to be taught as a language is taught. The student who speaks or plays their instrument more also practices and learns more. Students need opportunity to play along with more experience performers and I seek out every chance to insert my students into this role. I have secured opportunities for students to be the opening act for Texas country star Jolie Holiday. Recently my high school vocal student was the youngest semi-finalist in the OK City Stars competition. My students are paid performers at banquets, conventions, and more.
Seems I've always been a teacher, even when I didn't realize it; from my school days as first chair helping other students, through college where I taught for the Southern Nevada School of Music and at Vesleys Music Conservatory, through the time I received my first certified public school teaching position and after that as a business owner with employees, I have been teaching and learning. Currently I teach Instrumental, Vocal music and Speech/Drama in Oklahoma as a certified classroom teacher. I have produced State Speech Champions and a vocal student who received the coveted Red Card to appear on The VOICE tv show. I believe the forestated exemplifies my passion for teaching and having young people do more than they might think.
Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. Each person being an individual needs a base method along with tailored supplemental material. During a lesson I look for one or maybe two things that I can offer the student to improve upon, because when one feels overwhelmed one tends to avoid and music is definitely not something to be avoided.
Music is not made by the instrument be it voice, piano, trumpet or any other. Remember music is made by and comes through The Musician! I teach about how to be a musician. When students feel like musicians it fosters a greater sense of ownership and accomplishment bringing the joy needed to advance exponentially. As a students finds his or her internal "musician" we, teacher and student together, are moving along the same path making performance easy rather than a worrisome struggle.
Engages wonderfully with our 12 year old grand daughter. Very professional, kind and informative. Charles can make a performer out of the most timid child. We are very happy that we found him.
