Bachelor Degree: Columbia University, Professional Certificate: Berklee College of Music
I am is a singer, songwriter and guitarist based out of Nashville, TN. Although firmly rooted in bluegrass and classic country, my music incorporates elements from all facets of American roots music drawing inspiration from jazz, blues, rockabilly and old-time. I lead my own country band which plays original music as well as the music of my honky-tonk heroes such as Merle Haggard, George Jones and Gram Parsons. I am an in-demand side man and when not performing with the band, I play guitar and sing with a number of other musicians and bands including The Bad Oats, Miles Burger and Corrina Tadros. You can catch me performing as a regular in a variety of venues in the Nashville area and I also perform at private events and festivals throughout the country including Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Freshgrass Festival, Ogden Bluegrass Festival and Keyport Music Festival. I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in American History and a BA in Music Theory, I also earned a diploma in Guitar Performance from Berklee College of Music. During my time in school I studied with a variety of master musicians including Jake Workman, Michael Daves, Bruce Molsky, Greg Liszt, Joe K. Walsh, Kevin Barry and Lyle Brewer.
I have been teaching students for 7 years, since I was a college student at Columbia University. When I began taking on students, I soon learned that I loved teaching music as much I loved performing it. Not only was helping someone achieve their musical goals highly rewarding, but I found that teaching helped me to learn and grow as a musician as well. In 2021, I began teaching remotely over Zoom and Skype. Adapting my teaching style to an online format proved to be an interesting and rewarding challenge.
I teach students of a variety of ages and skill levels and I enjoy developing unique curriculum to fit each student’s needs and stylistic interests while incorporating elements of theory, ear training, singing and general music fundamentals into the lessons. I feel that teaching using real songs is the best and most engaging way to learn. I generally try to avoid teaching from a method book and instead work with a student to find what music excites them and use that as a way to introduce fundamentals.
I feel that one of the most important aspects of music that is often overlooked, is that music should be fun. Because of this, I try to keep my lessons focused on material that really excites a student. I believe that its very important to introduce a student to a wide variety of music to help them identify what really inspires them. Once a student has discovered an aspect of music that they're truly passionate about, then they are almost much more motivated to put in the practice to master that aspect of music.
