Overview:
Hello! I am a dedicated pianist, vocalist, and composer with a fervent passion for guiding people toward musical excellence. My musical journey is rooted in a strong educational foundation and a wealth of teaching and performing experience. I am a proud graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where I earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance in 2016 and my Master of Music in Composition in 2021. My academic journey continued at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, where I recently completed my Doctor of Music in Composition in 2024. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of teaching a diverse array of music courses. My teaching repertoire includes music theory, ear training and sight-singing, music fundamentals, and songwriting, as well as one-on-one composition lessons. Each of these courses has allowed me to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for music with students of all levels and backgrounds. I have been playing the piano for as long as I can remember, honing my skills as both a soloist and a collaborative pianist. My extensive experience in performance and accompaniment has enriched my teaching, enabling me to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded musical education. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, my goal is to help you achieve your musical aspirations and develop a deep, lasting appreciation for the art of music. Let's embark on this musical journey together!
EXPERIENCE
My musical journey encompasses a broad spectrum of roles and settings as both a performer and an educator. As a pianist and vocalist, I have played in various churches, including Sugar Land Baptist Church (Sugar Land, TX), Perry United Methodist Church (Riesel, TX), and First Methodist Church of Waco, serving as a soloist and accompanist. My vocal performance experience spans musical theater, opera, solo recitals, and chorus, showcasing my versatility and passion for different musical genres. At Florida State University, I taught keyboard skills and sight-singing as part of the ear training instruction and led the entire Music Theory sequence for undergraduates. Additionally, I taught a songwriting class tailored to students of all levels and backgrounds, fostering creativity and musical growth in each of my students. As a seasoned composer of vocal, instrumental, and orchestral music, my compositions have been performed by prestigious ensembles and musicians across North America. Through my work as a composer I have the privilege of channeling all of my musical talents and passions into creating music that deeply moves my audience.
METHODS USED
I believe in a holistic approach to music education, starting with the foundational elements that ensure long-term success. I use the Faber Piano Adventures series, which I myself learned from as a young pianist, to ensure the proper learning of fundamentals. From the beginning, I incorporate music theory and aural skills/ear training to foster a comprehensive understanding of music. Repertoire is carefully assigned according to the student's level, with pieces becoming progressively more advanced at the appropriate times. I strive to make lessons enjoyable and engaging, honoring each student's preference for style, repertoire, and skills, while ensuring they receive a well-rounded and thorough musical education.
LESSON STYLE
I strive to maintain a relaxed, approachable, and engaging atmosphere in my lessons, rooted in mutual respect and empathy. My primary goal is to help each student achieve their individual musical aspirations, drawing from my extensive experience in music pedagogy to ensure our time together is as effective as possible. I firmly believe that daily practice is essential, incorporating exercises in fundamentals, repertoire practice, and sight reading. Each lesson will cover these components, along with ear training and music theory, to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded musical education.
